What to expect: The hotel?s grand, arched entryway has been captured in innumerable photos and films since the hotel opened in 1926 at No. 1 Nob Hill, where the cable car starts its journey down California Street. This hotel is popular for royalty, heads of state, and vacationers. Many WWII vets return to the Top of the Mark to visit the place where they bade farewell to loved ones before shipping off to war.

Amenity highlights: A complete facelift preserved the hotel's historic integrity, but brought it up to date. Guestrooms are now equipped with universal cable Internet connections, bathrooms are now dressed in travertine marble and black granite, and the fitness and business centers have been expanded. Guests can get their hometown newspaper, in their native language, delivered to their door. Gold elevator doors etched with the hotel insignia, marble floors, and silk wall coverings confirm this hotel?s regal reputation.

Insider tip: Mark Hopkins, whose mansion once stood where the hotel is now, belonged to a wealthy, elite group of railroad barons known as the Big Four, all of whom built mansions on Nob Hill. That ?Hill of Palaces? was destroyed in the 1906 earthquake fires, but visitors can explore what remains of this opulent legacy at the Pacific Union Club and Huntington Park, both across from the hotel.
