What to expect: Local hospitality impresario Chip Conley may be tired of the ?hip hotelier? title, but at his 10-year-old Phoenix, the steady stream of rock and film stars, screaming tropical 1950s motorcourt architecture, and the Southeast Asian bar/restaurant with thatched-roof poolside bungalows, makes the label practically unavoidable. These hip guests don?t seem to mind the slightly downtrodden Tenderloin district. Amenity highlights: A complimentary Continental breakfast is served next to the heated outdoor pool?a rarity in San Francisco. The hotel?s on-site nightspot, the Bambuddha Lounge, features Southeast Asian-inspired food (mostly shared plates), an exotic drink menu, and dancing to DJ music. The Phoenix also provides complimentary on-site parking, and at check-in, guests receive complimentary tattoos (temporary, of course). Insider tip: San Francisco?s Civic Center, home to the magnificent domed City Hall; the War Memorial Opera House; Davies Symphony Hall; the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium (a performance venue); the Main Public Library; and the new Asian Art Museum are all within easy walking distance of The Phoenix.
