What to expect: Beneath Florida?s sapphire skies, venerable oaks draped in Spanish moss lend an air of Southern gentility. Dixie hospitality infuses the excellent staff?s friendly and attentive service. Guestrooms are filled with antiques and original artwork, and feature sweeping ocean views and marble bathrooms. Amenity highlights: Set against the Atlantic's crashing waves, the scenic and challenging Golf Club of Amelia Island is an avid golfer's dream. Designed by pros Mark McCumber and Gene Littler, the course is carved out of the island's lush beachfront. Fairways are framed by live oaks, palm trees, and pristine sand dunes, while the greens offer golfers the added challenge of contending with crisp Atlantic breezes. Resort guests can break out the tennis whites and test their game on any of the resort's nine expertly maintained courts, all of which are set next to the ocean offering expansive views. Five courts are lighted for night play. Insider tip: Amelia Island, the northernmost barrier island on Florida's Atlantic Coast, is one of the country's few remaining unspoiled island getaways. The resort's 1.5-mile stretch of dune-lined beach is a great spot for sunning, relaxing, and seashell-hunting. Guests can also hop a ferry to visit nearby Cumberland Island, where wild horses run free and more than 300 species of birds can be spotted.
